Five Different Ways You Can Prepare Collard Greens

Collard greens aren’t something everyone is familiar with. They’re a southern food that is abundant down here, but not everyone from further north or west has heard of them. If you’re dying to try these leafy greens, you’re going to want to know exactly how to prepare them so they’re at their most flavorful and most delicious when it’s time to dine.

Sauteed

To begin, chop your greens into long, half inch pieces and rinse them well with cool water. On the stove, heat two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil on medium heat and add your greens. Chop a clove of garlic and add it to the mixture. Turn the heat up to medium-high and let the greens cook for just a few minutes while you flip them. They’ll need to wilt just a bit, and you’ll want to add a touch of salt and pepper before serving.

Greens and Eggs

In a bowl, mix a few eggs, some salt and pepper and some milk. Toss in a bit of parmesan cheese for flavor and add it to a well greased pan. Cooke your eggs like you’re scrambling them, adding your finely chopped collared greens just a few minutes before your eggs are finished cooking. It’s a healthy addition to any breakfast.

Braised

All you’ll need to do here is get a stock pot and place it on the oven. Fill it with three to four cups of water, a ham hock, and two tablespoons of vegetable oil. From there, add your greens until they are completely submerged into the water. Add salt to taste and allow your greens to cook on low heat for approximately one hour. Remove them from the pot by straining them, and serve with dinner.

Steamed

Place an inch of water in the bottom of a pan. Next, place the greens in the same pan inside of a steamer basket and cover the pan with a fitted lid. Place the pan on the stove for a few minutes on high heat and let the water and heat steam the greens. You can add salt and pepper to taste and serve with your favorite meal.

Salad

Greens are not good in a salad unless they are steamed, so you’ll want to do that first. Once you do that, simply add your greens to a delicious salad recipe – any kind will work just fine. They’ll offer a different flavor that’s full and vibrant, so that you can enjoy an everyday salad in a much better than everyday manner.
