How to Make a Patty Melt Like the Pros

Sometimes, there’s nothing you want more than to sink your teeth into a nice, juicy old fashioned patty melt. And you do not want just any patty melt… you want the perfect one! That isn’t to hard to achieve, after all, even in a questionable diner or restaurant you’re safe by getting a patty melt, as it’s hard to really make a bad one. For the most part, in order to get a great melt you would have to visit your favorite diner to get one. Now, you don’t have to get into your car and make the drive to a diner – you can make it in the comfort of your own home!

Here’s how to make a patty melt like the pros:

Ingredients

  • 1 lb freshly ground chuck
  • 2 tb garlic salt
  • 1 tsp freshly ground pepper
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese
  • 8 slices rye bread
  • 1/2 cup Thousand Island dressing
  • 6 tb unsalted butter
  • 2 tb canola oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, place ground beef in and season with garlic salt and pepper. Divide the meat into four evenly-sized patties that are slightly longer and wider than the bread, as the meat will cook down. You will want to use a square container rather than a round one so the burger fits the bread evenly.
  2. In a skillet, heat canola oil on medium-high heat and add the onions, cooking without stirring for 7-8 minutes. Flip the onions to ensure they won’t stick and burn and cook for another 5 minutes or so to have them caramelize. Remove them from the heat and set aside.
  3. Heat the griddle over medium heat and add a tablespoon of butter to it. Place patty onto the griddle and let cook for 2-3 minutes on each side. You’ll know when it’s perfect when a crust forms on the bottom of the burger than releases it from the griddle.
  4. Take 2 slices of bread for the sandwich and spread Thousand Island dressing generously on one side each. Add a tablespoon of butter to the heated griddle and place both pieces of bread non-dressing side down on top of the butter.
  5. While the bread and butter are uniting, it’s time to assemble! Place patty on one piece of bread and top patty with the two slices of cheese. On top of the cheese, add caramelized onions. Top it off with the remaining piece of bread and flip sandwich over, cooking briefly.
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 for the remaining 3 sandwiches.
  7. Cut sandwiches in half and serve!
