15 Health Tips for a Better Body

health-tips-main

Being healthy is a big priority for most people, even if they don’t realize it because they’re too focused on being thin or bikini-ready. The best bodies are the healthiest bodies, even if they’re not all a size 0 or 2. When it comes to looking good, feeling good is just as important, and these 15 great health tips will have you turning into Joey from Friends when you see your reflection in the mirror; “How you doin’?”

health-tips-1

Drink Water

Skip the sodas and sweet beverages and stick with water. If you want to get fit and healthy, this is one of the most important things you can do for your body. Sometimes your desire to eat is simply your body’s way of telling you that you need a nice cold glass of H20. Of course, if you find yourself thirsty after a long encounter with others, it might be your body’s way of telling you that you need a nice big glass of vino, stat.

Eat the Good Stuff

No, not the good for you stuff. Well, yes, you do need to eat the good for you stuff, but you should also eat the good stuff. Don’t deprive your body of sweets and treats just because you don’t want to gain weight. Ever hear that you always want what you can’t have? Stop telling yourself you can’t have the cookie and eat it. Would you rather feel guilty about eating a cookie or two now or the entire box tomorrow?

health-tips-3

Eat Sweet Out

If you know you have a sweet tooth, don’t keep sweets in the house. You shouldn’t deprive yourself, but you should make it hard work for you to obtain that ice cream or cookie. After all, think about how much of an effort you consider it to walk from the couch to the kitchen for a bowl of ice cream at 10 pm and then consider the likelihood of you actually removing yourself from the couch and heading to the store for that same bowl of ice cream at 10 pm. Problem solved.

Go Pro (Protein, that is)

Add some protein to every meal and you might just find yourself eating less. The trick is that proteins are much more satisfying than carbohydrates and fats, which make you feel fuller longer. Consider this your weight-loss and good health weapon extraordinaire.

health-tips-5

Add a Little Spice to Life

This is a life secret you can apply to all areas, if you get my drift. However, when your food is spicy and delicious, you’ll actually eat less of it. Why? Because spices wake up your taste buds and make you enjoy the food more, meaning you’ll eat less. If it sounds confusing to anyone but a dietician or doctor, it probably is, but that’s why we’re not all dieticians or doctors.

health-tips-6

Check Out the Kids Menu

When you’re out to eat, go for the lunch portion or order straight from the children’s menu. Sometimes you just want the chicken tenders and French fries, but the portion you’ll get from the regular menu is enough to feed the entire family. The kids meal is more proportionate. As an added bonus; you’ll save a few dollars.

health-tips-7

Be Active

Take the stairs, take a walk, ride your bike, play a ridiculous game of hide and seek with your kids in the yard. Being physically active is one of the best ways to get fit, be healthy and lose weight. And it’s a lot more fun that dieting! Exercise does not have to be boring, it can be fun. You can do anything that gets you moving, even gardening, and it is exercise. Unfortunately, lifting the bottle to pour the wine and then lifting the glass to your mouth does not count as exercise.

health-tips-8

Don’t Stress in the Kitchen

Stress happens to everyone, and it’s not fun. But that doesn’t mean you get to feed your stress. If you’re feeling down, don’t reward yourself with a box of Girl Scout cookies. Find a better way, such as writing in your journal or exercising. Take a 30 minute walk around the neighborhood when you’re feeling stressed and you’ll avoid the extra calories associated with stress eating, burn some calories since you’re exercising and make yourself even better by boosting your mood, your confidence, and your glowing complexion.

Sleep

When you get at least eight hours sleep every night, your body regenerates and makes you healthier. You’re more alert, your metabolism is stronger, and…well, who cares what else sleep does to make you healthier? Sleep makes you healthier and that means that your doctor wants you to forget the dishes and take a nap! Enough said.

health-tips-101

Eat Tomatoes

You thought it was an apple, but that other red fruit is also something you need to eat one of per day. Eating one tomato every day can raise your lycopene levels, which are not only healthy for your diet but they also lower your risk of cancer and even reduce the signs of aging in your skin. There is no scientific proof that eating a dozen tomatoes per day will make you look like you did at 21, unfortunately.

health-tips-11

Write it Down

This may seem like a drag to those of us who haven’t a second of free time in the day, but writing down what you eat during the day is a quick way to make healthy changes. You may not think your diet needs help, but looking down at your notes and seeing a cheese Danish, six Hershey kisses, a supersized number 7 with soda from your favorite fast food joint, two glasses of wine, an extra helping of pasta with dinner and a bowl of ice cream for dessert might give you a big dose of reality.

health-tips-12

Eat Dairy

It may seem counterintuitive, but eating more dairy products can help you lose more weight while adding more muscle. The trick here is to add more dairy to your diet without adding too many more calories to it. There’s got to be an app for that.

health-tips-13

Make it a Grande

There’s nothing wrong with a little coffee every day. Not only does it make you feel less like running away from home and shooting imaginary daggers from your eyes at your coworkers, one or two cups of coffee each day can reduce your risk of heart failure and give you more energy throughout the day, which helps keep your metabolism going and your calorie-burning abilities on high.

health-tips-14

Eat Before Working Out

No, you don’t get to eat an entire box of cookies before you work out and call it a day. However, having approximately 100 calories 15 minutes prior to working out and then eat a healthy breakfast after working out to redistribute healthy calories to your body as early in the day as possible. A banana is a great pre-workout snack, though you can pick any healthy item around 100 calories. This helps your metabolism burn the fat and your body look fabulous.

Take Your Time

Eating dinner at a leisurely pace is great for your body. The slower you eat, the more less you eat because your body digests food faster and makes you feel fuller sooner. Gather the kids or your friends and sit down for dinner. Talk about your days, laugh, enjoy and lose weight and look great all at the same time. If that isn’t the epitome of multitasking, I don’t know what is.
