Help Your Child Get That Stubborn Baby Tooth Out

Dealing with a baby tooth should be no big deal.  The tooth gets loose, the child pulls it out, the tooth fairy does her part and everybody is happy.  Easy as pie, right?  Not always.

Every now and then, your child will have a baby tooth that just will not want to come out.  It is very frustrating for the child as well as the parent.  In addition, a loose baby tooth that hangs around too long can become very sore or even tighten back up which is not good.

There are some things that you can do to help your child get rid of a baby tooth that is being stubborn.  First of all, you should encourage your child to keep working with it and wiggling it to make sure that it stays loose and does not tighten back up.  If the tooth does tighten back up, you usually will need help from a dentist to remove it.

Secondly, you can try feeding your child some sticky candy such as taffy to help the baby tooth work it’s way out.  I actually lost a baby tooth like this when I was younger so I know that it works.  Sometimes, the child is not willing to eat something sticky because their baby tooth is too sore.  If that is the case, you can move on to another strategy.

You can also try using dental floss.  Dental floss is a wonderful tool for loosening up a stubborn baby tooth.  Many people use dental floss to help with pulling a baby tooth but they try to use it by tying it around the baby tooth.  A better strategy is to use the dental floss to work up under the tooth to help loosen it until it is ready to pull.  This was always my secret weapon with my children..
