Get Your Child To Take Their Medicine Without A Fight

You know the drill.  Your child gets sick and needs to take medicine but they refuse to without a fight.  This can be very frustrating for both parent and child but it doesn’t have to be that way.  There are ways to get your child to take their medicine without an all out war.

If your child does not like the flavor of a certain medication,  you can try to buy a different flavor if it is over the counter medication such as Children’s Tylenol or an allergy medication.  If your child is taking an antibiotic then you can ask your pharmacist to flavor the medication.  Most children’s antibiotics are flavored but pharmacists usually have a wide range of flavors.  If your child doesn’t like bubblegum flavoring, maybe they would like grape, cherry or cotton candy.  Sometimes they charge a few dollars extra but it is money well spent if it means they will take it without a fight.

Sometimes a little reward helps, as well.  Just like Mary Poppins said, a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.  Think of  a treat your child enjoys and allow them to have it after they take the medicine.  Sometimes it helps to let them see it in your hand so they know that all they have to do is swallow the medicine and it is theirs.  Little candies like Hershey’s kisses or miniature candy bars are a good idea to try as a reward.  They are getting a treat but it isn’t a huge amount of candy.

If these strategies don’t help, you have to get sneakier about getting the medicine in them.  You can try mixing it with something like pudding or apple juice.  Whatever they like that is strong enough to hide the flavor of the medicine.   Sometimes parents have to try these little tricks to make sure their children get well.
