Soothe Your Child’s Earache Until You Can Get In At The Pediatrician

An earache is a common childhood illness but you feel absolutely heartbroken for your child when they have one.  It is terrible when you know they are hurting.  You want to ease their pain but don’t know what all of the options are you can use to help them.  The good news is that there are things you can do to help with their pain but they should only be used to help with the pain until you can get them into the doctor.  These methods should never be used to substitute medical care.

You can give your child Tylenol or Motrin for their pain and any accompanying fever they may have with the ear infection.  You should follow your pediatrician’s recommendations for the amount of medication they should be given.   There are also other ways that you can help to alleviate the pain.  Having your child lay on the side of the ear that is hurting so that the ear with the earache is against the bed can help their ear to hurt less.  This helps because the infection is encouraged to drain out, if possible, rather than farther down inside the ear.

Heat can be a helpful aid in soothing your child’s earache until you can get in at the pediatrician.  You can use heat for their earache in a number of different ways.  You can use your blow dryer, set on low and at least eight to ten inches out from the ear to help with the pain.  A warm towel from the dryer can also feel good on an earache.  Another way of using pain to soothe an earache is to place rice in a sock.  You do not want to use instant rice for this but the old fashioned sort.  Place down in a sock and place a rubber band around the top of the sock.  You can warm this in the microwave for 10 seconds at a time until it is warm.  Be sure to check thoroughly before allowing your child to handle.  These tips should help you ease your child’s earache until you can get in at the pediatrician.
