Five Suggestions on What to Eat Before a Workout

food

The myth that you shouldn’t eat before working out is just that; a myth. While you don’t want to over-indulge and then work out, you do want to consume something so that you have enough energy to get through your workout and to get your metabolism up and running. If you work out hungry, you’re not doing yourself any favors. With that in mind, here are five great things to consume prior to working out.

Oatmeal

This is the perfect breakfast for someone looking to work out in the morning. It’s loaded with fiber and will give you enough energy to work out, increase your metabolism and make you feel energized. It’s also healthy, which means it’s not full of sugar or too many other unhealthy ingredients. Aim to have a bowl one to two hours prior to working out.

Greek Yogurt

The low-fat kind is the best. Add a little honey or some fruit and this will give you even more energy before a workout. Make sure that you’re consuming Greek yogurt and not the regular kind. The regular kind has too many refined sugars and processed ingredients, which can make you sick during your workout.

Whole Wheat Bagel

Skip the butter in favor of jam, please. This is a simple carb, which burns quickly. Heavy carbs (like a donut or regular bagel) take much longer to digest, which means they take much longer to provide you with the energy you need to work out. Butter is full of fat and other unhealthy ingredients, so skip that and cream cheese and use jam.

Scrambled Egg Whites

These are packed with protein. Protein helps you build muscle and provides you with energy. It’s the perfect meal to eat before a workout. It is okay to consume one whole egg in a day, so you might consider scrambling one whole egg with several whites to make yourself a little bit more to eat before working out.

Protein Shake

Using a water or juice-based shake allows you to work out without any tummy troubles. It’s also a good idea to add an entire banana to your shake in the blender as a way of providing some more nutrients to the meal. You’ll have energy to burn in time for your workout.
