What Should You Do If You Get A Fever Blister?

A fever blister is very painful and very aggravating.  They are also called cold sores and they appear on your lips or the area right outside of your lips.  They are caused by a virus called Herpes Simplex and are very contagious.  Usually, once you have this virus, you will get them on occasion throughout your life.

Although much about fever blisters is not known, there are some theories on what makes the virus become active in your body once again.  Stress seems to bring them on, so if you suffer from them frequently, you should try to reduce the stress in your life.  Eating foods that are hard on your stomach such as foods from the citrus family are thought to contribute to an outbreak as well.

When you have a fever blister, you should avoid eating or drinking after anyone, kissing your partner and wash all of your washcloths and towels in hot water with bleach to kill the germs.  You should also throw the lip products away after your fever blister is better as well as your toothbrush.

As far as treatment, thankfully, there are several things that you can do to help it to go away quicker.  There are commonly known treatments such as Abreva which is an over the counter medication you apply directly to the fever blister.  Tea tree oil is also helpful in treating it topically.

Lysine has been discovered to be helpful in healing fever blisters.  This is an over the counter medication that is in pill form and can be taken by mouth.  Lysine can be found in the vitamin aisle of your drugstore.  You can also wet one of the pills and hold it on your fever blister for a few minutes.

If fever blisters are a common occurrence of you or you cannot get yours to heal with common over the counter remedies then it may be time to see your doctor for treatment.
