Five Alternatives as Substitutes for Eggs

Whether you’re going vegan, discovered you have an egg allergy, just want to reduce your cholesterol or just plain ran out of eggs, there are many alternatives for the incredible edible egg. Substituting eggs is as easy as pie, especially when it comes to baking – it’s definitely easy to not miss them! There are many different ways you can replace eggs – ways that are all vegan-friendly – that don’t take away from what you are making.

Here are five alternatives to use as substitutes for eggs:

1. Applesauce

For most baking recipes, instead of using one egg, you can replace it with 1/4 cup of unsweetened applesauce. If all you have if sweetened applesauce, just reduce the amount of sugar you put in the recipe. Along with eggs, applesauce can also replace oil in the baking process.

2. Bananas

Instead of using one egg, you can also use 1/4 cup mashed banana (about half a banana’s worth) when you are baking. Heed of warning: the banana may give whatever it is you are baking a slight banana flavor – which may or may not be a good thing!

3. Flax seeds

Yes, you read that right: heart healthy flax seeds can definitely be used as an egg replacement. Just mix one tablespoon of ground flax seeds with three tablespoons of water and make sure it is fully absorbed before using it to replace one egg.

4. Tofu

Probably one of the best ways to substitute an egg is by way of tofu. The similar texture of the tofu to boiled  eggs helps it replace them in dishes like quiches, frittatas and even egg salad!

5. Vegetable oil

You can sub in 1/4 cup of oil for every egg necessary in a recipe. If you need more than one egg to be replaced, you might want to consider another substitution, as putting too much oil will make your finished product too greasy.
