Sunburns: The Best Prevention And Treatment Methods To Know And Use

Sunburns happen to some of us every summer.  But that doesn’t have to happen to you.  You can prevent sunburns and if the worst happens, treat them so they heal quicker and better.

The best sunburn prevention is to use sunscreen and that is no secret.  But many of us do not use sunscreen properly.  You should be using at least one ounce of sunscreen every time you apply or about the amount that would fit into a shot glass.  A lot of us try to skimp on sunscreen because we don’t like the greasy feel or we don’t want to buy another bottle.  You should also be applying sunscreen about every 2 hours.  If you are swimming or spending time near water, make sure that you purchase a waterproof formula.

There are other tips to help prevent sunburns.  Wearing a hat blocks a lot of the sun from hitting your face and sunglasses do the same thing for your eyes and the delicate skin around them.  Avoiding the sun during the hottest hours of the day is also a great tip to follow.

But sometimes, the inevitable happens and you get a burn.  If this happens to you, the first thing you should do is avoid more sun exposure until your burn heals.  Taking Tylenol or Ibuprofen helps with the pain of sunburns.  Aloe gel is great and offers cooling properties to the sting of sunburns.  If you don’t have any with you, Noxzema is a great fill in for aloe gel.  Try to avoid wearing tight clothing to allow for more comfort while your sunburn heals.

If you develop nausea, blisters or other symptoms you should make an appointment to see your doctor.  You may have got sun poisoning or a burn that requires medical care beyond what can be done at home.
