The Best Way To Get Through A Stomach Virus

Having a stomach virus is miserable; there is just no other way to say it.  Once you have it you really have no choice but to ride it out but there are strategies you can take to get through it quicker, easier and with less lingering symptoms.

The first thing you should think about is how to avoid a stomach virus.  Use hand sanitizer often during cold and flu season because that is when the chances of catching a stomach virus are the highest, as well.  Avoid people who have been sick for several days after they are well to have the best chance of not catching it.

But if, despite your best efforts, you do end up with it, know there are things you can do to get through it quicker.  When you begin getting sick, don’t eat anything at all for at least 24 hours.  If your stomach will tolerate it, you should try sips of Sprite or Ginger Ale. Crushed Ice is also something your stomach will tolerate better than other things.

After it seems your vomiting and diarrhea have stopped you should stick with clear liquids for several more hours.  Clear liquids include clear sodas, water, Gatorade and other drinks that you can see through.  Popsicles and jello are also acceptable.

When your stomach is tolerating that well you can begin trying to nibble on soda crackers.  The salt will taste good to you at this point.  From here you can advance on to toast and other foods that are high in carbohydrates but low in grease until you eventually return to a full normal diet.

Be sure to take Tylenol if you have a fever throughout your illness.  It will help your body to keep from getting dehydrated.  Dehydration is a risk when you have a stomach virus.  If you think this is a possibility you need to seek medical attention.
