3 Important Things to Consider When Buying a Home

One of the biggest investments you will ever make is your home, and that means you should know exactly what you want, what you need, and what you can sacrifice – if applicable – when it comes to buying. Take your time, think through what you want and look at one too many houses, because you never know whether you might regret your decision at some point. In the hunt for the perfect house, consider these options.

Needs Versus Wants

When you are looking for a home to purchase, chances are that you will not find everything you want in one single house (that’s why you build). You might find a home that has everything you want and need but needs some work, or you might find the house that has all the things you ever dreamed of having but it’s short a bedroom. Whatever it is, you need to make a list of what you want versus what you need. Needs come first; wants can be changed later. If you have four kids, you need more space and extra bedrooms rather than granite countertops.

Location

Take a few minutes to sit back and really think about the location. If you have kids, are you going to be happy living in a house that’s right off of a main road or will a fence make you feel better? Does the idea of living in the country sound good because the house is perfect or can you really see yourself commuting for years? Does that house so close to work make you happy or will the sound of the airport down the street make you crazy? Look into the future and think this through very carefully.

Size

You might not want to clean three bathrooms and you might not think you need a third bedroom, but if you decide to have kids or guests, you might find yourself missing these things. The prime location and perfect floors are tempting, but if you lack space you will find yourself unhappy in the future.
