Tips on Decorating Small Spaces

Whether you are moving into your first apartment or buying your own home for the first time, decorating is in your near future. Decorating your own home is fun and fantastic, but it can be challenging when you are dealing with small spaces. Fear not, ladies, even if your house isn’t the mansion of your dreams you can still make it look stylish and sophisticated – as well as larger – if you use a few basic decorating tips designed to maximize small spaces.

Color

The most basic tip for decorating a small space is choosing paint wisely. Typically, lighter colors are the best option because they reflect light and create the illusion of a larger space. However, if you are dead set on a darker color for your walls you need to accent them with wall sconces. Wall scones reflect light upward, which creates the illusion of a taller room. The effect is that of a cozy, sophisticated space. Inspire size with furniture in very light colors.

Furniture

Aside from choosing furniture in light hues, you need to scale it to the room. Oversize furniture will make a room look even smaller. However, if you really must have that large sectional, forgo a love seat or matching ottoman and recliner. Instead, pick up one or two armless chairs. Otherwise, choose smaller furniture and you can have that couch and the loveseat with the matching end tables.

Storage

Furniture with storage space is the best for small spaces. Coffee tables with a lot of drawers or ottomans that open into a storage container are great ways to hide your living room necessities while still ensuring they are right there when you need them.

Clutter

Whatever you do in your small space, keep clutter out! Nothing screams “I’m cluttered and small and unorganized and not attractive” like tables covered in knick-knacks and picture frames. A few attractive vases and frames are fine, but more than that makes a small space look cluttered, which is never a good look.
