3 Things that Inhibit Your Motivation and Goal Making

Motivation is something that we use to keep our goals alive and part of our reality. However, sometimes it’s hard to do exactly that when we constantly use motivation crushers. What’s a motivation crusher, you ask? Well, it’s something that we tell ourselves thinking that it’s going to make us fight harder and worker harder and be stronger, when in actuality all it’s doing is making us a bit lazier and less motivated.

I’ll Do My Best

I’ll do my best leaves the bar too low. In fact, it’s pretty much nonexistent. Why? Because when you say this, you leave yourself wide open to finding excuses as to why your not best is your best. For example, you suddenly throw yourself into vigorously cleaning your house or your car or into a paper you have to submit to an editor soon and you forgo doing your best on your goals because you were too busy with that. Then you say you did your best with what you had to work with…but it’s not true.

Aiming to Please

The biggest mistake you make when trying to motivate yourself to complete a goal is aiming to please someone else. Your goals have nothing to do with anyone else. Instead, focus on pleasing yourself with your work and you’ll be far happier with the outcome than you will be if you try to base your decisions and your work around what other people think.

Minimizing Your Goals

Say you make a to-do list in the morning and you have 20 items on it. Suddenly you begin to feel overwhelmed and instead of starting on that list right now to get it over with, you try to convince yourself that as long as you get 5 or 6 of those things done and crossed off your list, you’ll be good to go. It’s called minimizing your goals and it’s not good for your motivation.
