Three Important Lessons Your Mom Taught You

Mom

Whether you’re extremely close to your mom or you’re relationship isn’t quite so peachy, you have to admit that as an adult it’s easy to see that she was right about a few things. Perhaps you didn’t always agree growing up – it’s a rite of passage for teens to disagree with their mothers and feel they’re ruining your life – but your mom was right about a lot of things. Your mom is smarter than you gave her credit for and she managed to teach you some valuable lessons – even if you didn’t understand them right away.

Don’t Compare Yourself

Her words are echoing in your brain right now, “If Susie were to jump off a bridge, would you jump off the same bridge, too?” she asked when you decided you didn’t need to wait until you were 21 to have a drink. You probably heard a statement similar to this more than once when you were growing up, and it probably drove you nuts. But she was right; there is no sense comparing yourself to others or following the crowd. You are you and no one else, and doing something just because everyone else is doing it is a bad idea.

Don’t Grow Up Too Fast

Now that you’re responsible for your own mortgage, your own insurance, your own utilities, kids, career and everything in between, you might find yourself wondering why you were in such a hurry to grow up. Life was pretty good when all you had to worry about was studying for a test, doing a few pages of homework and sleeping until noon every weekend and holiday and summer break. While you love your life now, you certainly understand the benefits of being a child in hindsight. Your mom was right about this; you have your whole life in front of you so why bother wishing it away?

Don’t Smoke

She told you not to do it and she was right. It ages your skin, causes cancer and makes you look much older than you really are. Your mom was right; smoking is not cool no matter who does it.
