It’s not actually as difficult as you might think, and perhaps our advice can save you a bit of humiliation and embarrassment on your first day at work. We can provide you with a few tips that will help you to impress your new boss without upsetting the pecking order or without making yourself look like you’re trying too hard. Here are a few proven and effective tips for impressing the new boss.

Come in Swinging

We don’t mean that you have to come in and take over and make other people feel as if you are putting them out. We want to you to come in swinging by knowing as much as you can, doing the work and being big time. Be on time, be present and do the job. It’s seriously the best way to impress a new boss.

Pipe Up

Say something. Contribute your ideas at meetings. Even if they are not good ideas since you’re new a d still a bit unfamiliar with the way things work around here, being open about your ideas is impressive. You aren’t going to learn if you don’t try to learn, and people love it when you go ahead and speak up from the start.

Be Respectful

The most important thing you can do when you come to work is be respectful. This means not being rude to others. This means not interrupting, not shooting other people down and not ignoring their opinions. It means listening, taking notes and providing constructive criticism. It also means sharing the glory when you all work well as a team.

Ask Questions

One of the things that so many new employees forget to do is ask questions. You’re new, so maybe you want to look like you’re a pro, but you’re not. Go ahead and ask questions. Ask people what it is that you can do to help. Ask your boss when you are confused and when you just want to double check. Your boss is going to be impressed that you are willing to ask instead of falter and drown your way through a project hoping it turns out right.

Own up to Mistakes

We all make mistakes. Your new boss didn’t hire you on the premise that you are a perfect creature who never does anything wrong. Your boss hired you because you are good at what you do, but he or she knows that you are not perfect. If you make a mistake, say something. Own up to it and take responsibility. Don’t hope no one notices, and don’t try to ignore it. Own it and learn from it, and move on from it.

Keep Your Word

If you say you will do something, do it. If you offer to help someone with something, help them. If you tell your boss you are happy to do this, that or the other, do it. Do not make statements and then not follow through. Yes, you are only human, but you have to keep your word. Your boss will be impressed that you are actually doing what you said you would do when so many people seem to have an issue with that small concept.

Prove Yourself

You are new, and that means you have to prove yourself. That means you have to step up to the plate and do something big and impressive and memorable so that your boss takes notice. This means getting on your new projects and jobs and doing them with success and a good attitude. Your boss will take notice and he or she will like that you know what you are doing and that you do it without complaint.

Don’t Complain

This is the next most important thing you can do to impress your new boss; do not complain. Say nothing about your irritations and your problems. Do not complain about other people behind their back or what is asked of you to other people. Keep your complaints to yourself or take them home to your spouse at night so that people from the office don’t hear you and start to make assumptions about you. No one likes a complainer.

Don’t Take Things too Seriously

Your job is to do your work, not take things seriously around the office. You have to have a sense of humor and a bit of intelligence to do any job because it’s going to make things easier. Don’t be the serious can’t-take-a-joke employee. Be someone who knows when to be serious and when it’s all right to tell a joke or make light of a situation. When you don’t take everything so seriously, it’s going to make your job a lot easier, and it’s really going to impress your boss a lot.

Don’t Engage in Office Gossip

The one thing that will impress your new boss on day one is someone who ignores office gossip and manages to say above the fray. It happens everywhere you go; there is always someone to talk about or gang up on, and it’s obvious to everyone in the office. Don’t be that person, and don’t allow others to talk you into that behavior. Don’t try to make friends by asking a group of new employees for the scoop or down low on everyone in the office. Form your own opinions and stay out of the mess that other people are so fond of creating. Their issues with someone might become your issues since you work together and some people are just irritating, but most of the time they’re personal issues that should not affect you.
