It may be hard to believe that once upon a time, women were thought of as a very secondary gender, especially prior to women’s suffrage as well as other women’s rights, but it’s a historical fact that it’s true. Because of this, it was deemed necessary to hold an annual International Women’s Day, starting in the early 1900s. The first International Women’s Day (formerly known as International Women’s Working Day) was held on March 19, 1911, which included rallies and organized meetings. It was then moved to March 8 in 1913 and has been the date ever since. It is held annually to celebrate women’s achievements throughout history and across nations.
We ladies have come a long way since then and can only go up from here! One way to celebrate the big day this coming Saturday? Look no further than your own TV! Hollywood has taken note and there have been some very female empowering films made, especially as of late.
Here are five women empowering movies you can watch to get into the Women’s Day spirit:
1. The First Wives Club
Goldie Hawn, Better Midler and Diane Keaton all in the same movie? This 1996 comedy is about three divorced friends who seek revenge on their ex-husbands who ended up leaving them for young women. The trifecta of some of Hollywood’s greatest actresses supporting each other to take on their exes – revenge never sounded so good!
2. Legally Blonde
Who emits more girl power than Elle Woods?! Reese Witherspoon’s perky sorority girl-turned-Harvard Law’s most ambitious and determined student is the epitome of female empowerment. That and the hilariousness that is the “Bend and Snap” and you’ve got the perfect film to celebrate!
3. Charlie’s Angels
The 1970s TV series was already jam packed with ladies kicking major caboose, and the 2001 reboot was no different. Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu made being a butt-kicking lady look flawless.
4. Erin Brockovich
The role that won Julia Roberts an Oscar was one juicy one! The movie was based on the life and happenings of title character Erin Brockovich, an unemployed mother who ends up taking on the Pacific Gas and Electric Company who was accused of polluting the city’s water supply. Strong-willed Erin used her feminine ways to take on one of the nation’s biggest companies!
5. The Help
Men took the back burner in this female powerhouse-filled movie! Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Jessica Chastain, and Bryce Dallas Howard made up a good chunk of the female dominated cast in this movie about racism.
