    An Okinawan who is currently 100 or older would’ve been in their early-mid 30s when the battle on island killed a quarter of the population, some by famine, so it kind of makes sense that someone strong enough to have survived 1945 might still be around today.

      It kind of makes sense, but it doesn’t make sense. Most likely what happens is people lie about their age, because to them it’s not an important thing or they’ve forgotten how old they are. A village in South America was reputed to have a few hundred people older than 100 living there too, until scientists realized that everyone lied about their age and most people were no older than 80.

        D., nobody is lying about anything; Okinawa is hardly a tiny village. It has a population of 1.4 million, almost all of whom live on the main island, so it’s not surprising that that island alone might have hundreds of centenarians on it.
