John Travolta Breaks Silence Over Oscar Flub: ‘I’ve Been Beating Myself Up’

2014 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Hosted By Graydon Carter - Arrivals

This past weekend’s Oscar awards telecast was one very memorable awards show, thanks to the speeches, outbursts, and flubs. One of the most talked about moments was when John Travolta announced Frozen songstress – and Broadway VIP – Idina Menzel, announcing her incorrectly as “Adele Dazeem” before she sang the Oscar-winning film’s song. The flub has garnered memes and video replay of that exact moment, as well as a “Get Travoltafied” name generator that allows you to enter your name to get a borderline ridiculous name that he would  have butchered your name with.

So how exactly did that mess-up come about: did he really not see due to a teleprompter malfunction? Did he miss rehearsals and just not know how to pronounce it on the spot? The Grease and Saturday Night Fever legend has finally spoken out about the mistake, saying he’s been “beating myself up” over the issue.

“Then I thought… What would Idina Menzel say? She’d say, ‘Let it go, let it go!’Idina is incredibly talented and I am so happy Frozen took home two Oscars Sunday night!” Travolta said in a statement.

While Travolta still really hasn’t offered up a valid explanation as to what really happened and is still getting heat over his big mistake, there’s no doubt that Menzel is getting some pretty good publicity! Her Frozen co-star Kristen Bell tweeted after her performance: “So proud of my friends @alittlejelee @lopezbobby @Lyrikris10 Chris buck, Peter Del Vecho& @idinamenzel (Adele Nazeem)for their wins tonight”
