The red carpet, the jewels, the gowns, whom is arriving with whom — this kind of glamor and glitz can mean only one thing; the Oscars are here. The purpose of the Oscars is to award outstanding performances by those who truly deserve the recognition; at least to those in Hollywood. For the rest of the world, the purpose is to see who wore what and whose borrowed jewels are worth the most – and to see the best actress and actor.
The Oscars are coming. The evening of March 2nd will bring out the best and the brightest of Hollywood. Designers will scramble for the honor of dressing the nominees and the world will tune in from their couches for an inside glimpse into the glamour that is Hollywood. This year’s elegant, sophisticated and undeniably gorgeous nominees will join the ranks of Hollywood legends, helping to make Oscar history.
Now that we know who the nominees are, it’s time to take a look at Oscar fashion over the decades to see how it will differ this year.
The 1930s
There’s no doubt that the 30s were a time of simple elegance and beautiful people. It was during the 30s that men wore black bowties, sported thin moustaches and slicked back their hair in a gentlemanly fashion. Women sported short hair cuts with gentle wave and showed off their glamorous curves in feminine gowns in lovely, light shades.
The 1950s
The year was 1958. It was the year Joanne Woodward won the title for Best Actress, accepting her Oscar in a strapless ball gown complete with elbow-length white gloves. Looking back, her beauty and style was timeless and elegant, much like the gowns we’ve seen on the red carpet in recent years. Simple, sophisticated and elegant; it’s tangible proof that those are three things that never go out of style.
The 1970s
The 70s were a good time for those who lived them. The casual look at life, the laid-back way of doing things and the unforgettable fashion are something to remember. It was in the 70s that some of our favorites, think John Wayne and Goldie Hawn, Gene Hackman, Jane Fonda and Cloris Leachman, and Marlon Brando and Liza Minnelli were Oscar winners. The women wore their hair short and trendy or long and laid-back. Their gowns were colorful, flouncy and probably not something you’ll see your favorite actresses sporting this year, but that doesn’t make them any less fun. The men were dashing and sported more hair in one single decade than all the other decades combined. But that’s the 70s for you.
The 1990s
There were shoulder pads, sequins, and of course, darling Miss Daisy. The 1990s were a time when the Oscar carpet seemed to have a theme of “the bigger the better”. Between the shoulder pads and the big hair, it was a time that seemed fashionable then, but that we can only hope never comes back into style.
The 2010s
We’re not quite done with this decade yet, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have some fashion to talk about. In this decade, we’ve seen simple come back. Think of 2010 when Kathryn Bigelow and Sandra Bullock both accepted their Oscars with casual hair left down and straight. Or think back to 2012 when Octavia Spencer and Meryl Streep both accepted in simple gowns with sleeves. The 2010s are bringing sophisticated back; and we like it. Now all we have to do is tune in to the Oscars on March 2nd to see what’s hot this year.
