Fashion designer, renowned stylist, and fashion model L’Wren Scott was found hanged to death Monday in her New York City apartment in an apparent suicide. Scott, 47, was the longtime girlfriend of superstar singer Mick Jagger. This is a tragic loss for the fashion world and it seems senseless and hard to understand why a beautiful, successful woman would take her own life. All we can do is look back at the beauty of her clothes, made in such gorgeous, luxe fabrics and cut and draped so stunningly that they are truly works of art.

The raven haired beauty was born in Utah in 1964 to Mormon adoptive parents. Known for her tall frame, she had already reached six feet tall in height by 12 years old, and would eventually grow to be 6’4”. She left Utah after graduating from high school and headed to Paris to pursue a career as a model. There, she went on to work for the likes of Thierry Mugler and Chanel, and posed for renowned fashion photographers, including Guy Bourdin and David Bailey.

Scott moved to California in the early 1990s, where she established herself as a successful stylist. She worked initially in collaboration with the legendary photography Herb Ritts, and later with Helmut Newton, Mario Sorrenti, and Karl Lagerfeld. Her reputation spread until she was a highly influential celebrity stylist working with Madonna and Julia Roberts, among others. Scott began designing costumes for films such as Ocean’s Thirteen, Eyes Wide Shut, and Shine a Light, a documentary by Martin Scorsese about The Rolling Stones. Scott had been linked romantically to Mick Jagger since 2001, dating for over ten years. They were still currently dating at the time of the designer’s passing.

Angelina JolieNicole KidmanPenelope Cruz, Christina HendricksAmy Adams, and Sarah Jessica Parker all wore Scott’s dresses to the Academy Awards. Other celebrities who have worn her designs include Michelle ObamaReese WitherspoonSandra BullockJennifer Lopez, and Uma Thurman. Scott also designed an exclusive holiday collection this past winter for Banana Republic. The line featured women’s apparel and accessories.

Scott’s website states that she was in “favor of creating versatile, classic pieces that can be worn in a variety of ways and environments.” Let’s look back at some of her amazing designs and wish that she may rest in peace.
