Helping Loved Ones Who are Grieving

It’s an unfortunate world in which we have to say goodbye to loved ones. Whether it’s because of illness or old age, death happens; and when it does, it’s difficult to find the right words to comfort the grieving. You want to let your loved ones know you are there for them during this difficult time, but you might not be sure how to do it in a way that conveys your sorrow and love but not make anyone feel uncomfortable or worse about their loss. These tips might make it easier for you to convey your feelings and let them know you care.

Bring a Meal

When someone loses someone they care about, cooking and caring for things around the house might take a backseat. It’s not the most original way to show you care but nevertheless, it’s a great way to show that you are thinking about your loved ones and you are there to help. Bring a meal they can freeze and heat up for later. Bring plenty, because they are likely to have people in and out during this difficult time.

Offer Your Assistance

If you are looking for a way to help out and take some of the burden off of a friend or family member, look for ways you can help. Offer to drive the kids to school or to pick up groceries or items they need from the store. Offer to walk the dog or to pick up the dry cleaning. It’s a small gesture, but it’s one that means a lot to someone who is in mourning.

Listen

Sometimes the best thing you can do for someone when they are going through a loss is to be there and just listen. Don’t offer any advice unless you are asked. Just be there to say, “I’m so sorry for your loss,” and offer a shoulder to cry on.
