How to Widen Your Social Circle

If you’ve ever sat around on a Friday night wondering why you have nothing to do and why it seems you have no one to call to entertain you, it’s time to make some serious changes to your social life. While my husband and I sometimes wish we had this problem, we know all too well how fortunate we are to have such busy lives and we wouldn’t change it for anything. However, some people are not that fortunate, which means that if you’re one of them, you need to make some changes to open up your social circle, and your social life.

Open Yourself Up

It’s human nature to take offense to differences and put up walls when other people do not make you happy. Unfortunately, when you build those walls you are doing nothing but keeping people out and narrowing your own life. Instead, be curious about others. Don’t put up a wall with someone because they don’t seem like someone you’d like, get curious and get to know people first and then decide if they are worthy of your time.

Don’t be Boring

Seriously, this is advice. You might raise your eyebrows and think that you know better than to be boring, but you’d be surprised how many people don’t. Listen, no one wants to hear you talk about all the features of your new car for 10 minutes. If you got a new car and you’re excited, great; but don’t bore people with the details. I’ll give you a little heads-up: The rest of us have heated and air conditioned seats, vista roofs, and Bluetooth capabilities, too. For the past six or seven years, in fact. Be ready to drop what you have to say when people are bored with you. If you are boring, no one wants to spend time with you.

Don’t Ask Too Many Questions

It’s great to ask questions and be interested in others, but if that’s all you do, it can feel like an interrogation. Try mixing questions with statements. Elaborate on a subject you know something about. And for the love of all things on earth, don’t ask anything personal or annoying.

These tips will help you meet new people, make new friends, and widen your social circle.
