Larry David is heading to Broadway

Most people won’t be able to curb their enthusiasm about this news. Larry David, every comedy lover’s favorite curmudgeon, is writing a Broadway play that he plans to star in. Fantastic! David is the comedic genius who brought the world both Seinfeld and HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, two shows that provided as many laughs as probably any half hour comedy series ever.

David has titled the play Shiva. A “shiva” is the Jewish traditional period of mourning that follows a Jewish funeral. One can’t help but picture Death at a Funeral or Four Weddings and a Funeral, two examples of finding humor in the middle of a typically sad event. If anyone can make people laugh about Jews sitting shiva, it’s Larry David, without question.

In addition to his two hit television comedies, David’s other writing credits include Saturday Night Live and the 2013 television movie Clear History. Larry also recently appeared in an absolutely hilarious episode of Seinfeld co-writer and star Jerry Seinfeld’s comedy web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

Scott Rudin is on board as producer of the upcoming play. Rudin has produced countless plays and musicals for the stage, including the Broadway hits A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, starring Nathan Lane, The Book of Mormon, and the revivals of plays A Raisin in the Sun and the Pulitzer-Prize winning Fences, both starring Denzel Washington. Rudin also has an incredibly impressive filmography of movies and television shows he’s produced, including Silicon Valley, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Inside Llewyn Davis, The Newsroom, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Moneyball, and There Will Be Blood, to name just a few. In other words, having this guy in your corner as a producer basically guarantees a hit.

Who else can’t wait for this particular shiva?!
