Children: Strengthening the Parent/Child Bond

Your children are pretty awesome little people. Right now you have a strong, happy, loving relationship with them, but will that last forever? The answer is yes; if you practice building and strengthening your relationship with your children. Remember, they don’t have to like you or even love you, so if you don’t take the time to remind them consistently that your relationship is the most important one in their lives, they might forget. Here are three important tips for strengthening your bond with your children.

Hug Your Child

Don’t save hugs for special moments, such as school drop off or bedtime. Hug your children as much as you can. Spontaneous shows of affection such as this remind your kids that you always love them and you always want to show them just how much. Even when they shy away with embarrassment because their friends are watching, hug them anyway.

Have Fun

One of the most important things you can do with your children to show them just how much you love them and just how much your bond means to you is to play with them and have some fun. Step away from the computer – work can wait – put down your phone – your girlfriend’s text message can wait – and head outside to play with them. Make it fun, make it memorable. Go on a treasure hunt. Play by their rules. Just have fun with them. The more they laugh and smile, the more fun they’re having and he more you’re strengthening your bond.

Listen

Kids may not always make sense when they talk to you. I know my five-year-old will start telling me about her day and somehow a story that starts with her math assignment ends abruptly with a totally different story about that one time last year at Christmas when we went to see ICE at the Gaylord. But you know what…you just have to listen. You might not understand, get it or be able to piece together how story A ended up 78 miles from where it began, but you still have to listen. It shows you care.
