Parenting Advice You Use On Your Kids You Should Also Use on Yourself

Parenting makes even the best of us the worst hypocrites. Ask any parent around and they’ll tell you it’s hard not to be one from time to time. And just because you’re an otherwise amazing parent doesn’t change the fact that you might actually be a hypocrite. If you don’t want your kids to see you behaving in this manner, try taking some of the advice you give to them. It’s such simple advice that those of us who take it are shaking our heads in embarrassment that we haven’t thought of it before – parenting is tough work.

Use Your Inside Voice

How many times do parents say this to their kids, while screaming at the top of their lungs to be heard? Okay, so sometimes that’s the only way to be heard when you’re in the midst of parenting more than one child – sometimes just one child. However, it’s a good piece of parenting advice. Keep your voice down. Don’t raise your voice, improve your argument. You can be heard and make a point without yelling. It’s called being firm. Even if you want to yell, try not to. It’s not a good example (plus, kids usually find it scarier when you speak very quietly while looking them in the eye).

Think Before You Speak

Kids are not notorious for their thinking then speaking skills. Then again, are most adults? Probably not. Instead of threatening to take this or that away or making your kids do this or that or whatever, think about what you’re saying before you say it. The second you make a threat, you have to follow through. Think first; you don’t want to threaten to keep them home from Grandma and Grandpa’s sleepover Friday night (date night!) if they keep arguing, because if they don’t stop – you have to keep them home and guess who loses?

Be Positive

A positive attitude fosters a positive attitude. Kids make it hard to be positive from time to time. However, if you can stay positive and teach them to do the same, you’re going to be very happy. You’ll have kids who believe in themselves, you’ll believe more in yourself, and everybody wins.
