Being Rude is Overrated and Impolite

Sometimes people are just so rude to you or so irritating that your first reaction is to be rude right back; don’t. It might not be as simple as it sounds, but being rude to others is not actually as satisfying as you might think. Yes, people can really do some irritating things and they can cause you a great deal of inconvenience, but choosing kindness is a far better method of dealing with rude people than being rude in return.

Consider Their Burdens

You have no idea what is going on in the life of the waitress who simply will not bring you the right food, listen to your requests or take care of doing her job properly. While you might be tempted to yell at her or refrain from tipping her because of her seeming lack of competence, she might be dealing with the loss of a loved one or learning of a terrible health diagnosis that might shock you. Other people might not show their burdens in a way that you recognize, which is why it’s important to be kind to people rather than rude – even when you don’t think they deserve your kindness.

Consider Their Battles

The sales clerk who doesn’t talk to you because you don’t happen to be dressed like the kind of person who typically shops in this particular boutique might come off as rude. However, she might be fighting a battle she can’t control and she’s not actually being mean; she might just be distracted. Politely respond to her and give her the chance to do the same to you. Your smile and kindness might be exactly what she needs to turn her day – or her life – around.

Kill ’em with Kindness

Of course, there are always people in life who are just miserable and unhappy. They treat others poorly simply because they can. Don’t respond to them in the same manner. These people relish your rude behavior and the fact that they affected you when in reality, it affects them far more when you simply treat them kindly.
