You want to go somewhere that costs you 30,000 points per night to book and you want to stay 3 nights. The hotel costs $200 per night without points. You need 90,000 points to stay free but you only have 80,000 points. So, you decide to buy some points and get the 90k you need to stay free that third night. You need to purchase 10,000 points at $13.50 for every 1,000 points. That’s a grand total of $135 for the points. The hotel room without points is $200 per night. You can buy these points and save yourself $65 per night; that’s a price that’s worth it.
If you want to go ahead and buy yourself a number of free nights right now, you can do it. It might not seem like a great deal, but we are talking a 100% return. So let’s say you want to buy the maximum allowed 60,000 points per calendar year right now. That’s going to cost you (at $11.50 per thousand points) $690. You’ll end up with 120,000 points in return. That’s as many as 12 nights at an IHG hotel depending on the level you choose.
