What You Don’t Know Until You Are Engaged

I remember the day my husband proposed to me like it was yesterday, even though it was actually 9 years, 3 months and a few days ago. I was 19 years old, he was 20. He surprised me with a weekend getaway where we spent time at the beach, time in our hotel room, and we got all dressed up for a gorgeous dinner along the water. After dinner he suggested we take a walk along the water and that we stop in front of a gorgeous fountain and take some pictures. He handed our camera to a nearby couple to take a photo of us together. I posed and smiled. And kept smiling, and smiling, and smiling. I then realized that my then boyfriend was down on the ground. I immediately snapped at him to stand up and stop fidgeting with his shoes before he got his pants dirty. It was then that the woman snapping our photo began to scream.

After checking to see that there wasn’t a murder happening nearby, I realized that my husband was still on the ground, the woman was still screaming, and he wasn’t fidgeting with his shoes. He was holding up a box. With a ring in it; a beautiful diamond that I had no idea he purchased. I don’t remember what he said, only that I had my hands over my mouth, I was nodding my head, and I was crying like a baby…and we have a photo of the exact moment to remember it with. That was 9 plus years ago, and I still get excited thinking about the day my now husband proposed. It’s a huge day, and even though you may have imagined it for years, there are a few things you don’t really know until you get engaged.

It’s Not Perfect

No matter how many times you imagine your proposal, it won’t be perfect. You might have a zit. You may not feel very good. He may do it at home while you’re in the middle of brushing your teeth. Or you may find yourself snapping at him while he attempts to propose because you’re too worried about looking good in a photo to notice that he is on one knee. However, it doesn’t matter. It’s your proposal, and it is yours alone.

Figure Out the Cliffsnotes Version of Your Proposal

The first 10 times you tell the story, it’s amazing. The next 10 times are a little less fantastic, and eventually you just want to print it out and hand it to people to read before they can ask and you have to tell the same story for the 45th time in the past hour. Get used to it, honey. It’s your proposal and people will ask about it. And really, you’ll never get the chance to talk about it again, so go for it now.

It’s Hard Not to Start Planning

Since we were very, very young when we got engaged, we decided to wait two years to get married. We had stuff to do, careers to establish, and a house to build before we said our vows. Even with two years to plan, I had our entire wedding planned in the first three months of our engagement. And then I spent the next year and nine months waiting impatiently for the wedding to arrive. It’s hard not to start planning right away.
