How To Get Up to a 25% Discount When Purchasing SPG Points

Purchasing SPG Points

The best way to earn miles and hotel points is to actually fly somewhere or stay in a hotel, but we like the idea of purchasing SPG points to earn free nights, discounts and other benefits through the Starwood Preferred Guest program – and now is the time to do it. Marriott Hotels just announced their plan to acquire the Starwood hotel brand, which means that there are very likely some big changes coming to the company in the near future. Many SPG members are concerned that the Marriott brand will drag down the value of their memberships, their points and their stays with their less than luxury brand – and it might be a valid concern. However, now the company will be the biggest hotel group in the world, and that means SPG members have more hotels to choose from when booking their stays.

Of course, SPG members typically prefer a higher-end hotel such as the St. Regis or the Le Meridien brand than they do the everyday average Marriott, but in the interest of remaining optimistic, we’re going to help you work your magic and earn more points by actually just purchasing SPG points through your account. It’s so much easier than booking a vacation and actually traveling to earn points. Starwood will not become a Marriott hotel group brand until mid-2016, and we have no idea how this will affect the value of your SPG points and rewards, but I’ll tell you that I plan on using as many of mine as possible prior to the acquisition to be on the safe side.

Purchasing SPG Points at a Discount

Now we get to the good stuff; purchasing SPG points for a discount is within range right now, specifically if you are able to do so before December 31. The hotel group is offering a 25% discount on all points purchases, and that’s going to make a huge difference in the price of points. The catch is that you only get a 25% discount when you buy a certain number of points. There are points tiers and each is worth a certain discount. The price per point is 3.5 cents, usually, so you buy them in 500 point increments for $17.50.

  • 5,000 – 9,500 points is worth a 10% discount
  • 10,000 – 14,500 points is worth a 15% discount
  • 15,000 – 19,500 points is worth a 20% discount
  • 20,000+ is worth a 25% discount

To make your purchase, you need only log into your SPG account online and begin.

  1. Buy and give points link is the one you’re looking for and need to click on
  2. Choose the buy starpoints now option and then choose the number of starpoints you are interested in purchasing (up to 20,000 per year)
  3. Provide a payment and confirm your order

The fine print when purchasing SPG points states that you must be a SPG member for at least 14 days prior to making any points purchases, and that you can only purchase 20,000 points per year.

Is this worth it? Let’s do some math and find out.

If you are purchasing SPG points yourself, you’d pay $175 for 5,000 points without a discount. With a 10% discount, you’d only pay $158. If you go all the way to the top of the pole and purchase 20,000 starpoints, you’re going to spend $700 purchasing SPG points without a discount. With that 25% discount, however, you’re going to spend only $525 for all those points. Is that worth it? I think so. Just remember that purchasing SPG points with this deal is always better when you spend more. The more you buy, the more you save.
