Saving Money on Your Utility Bills Each Month

With winter in full swing here in Florida, everyone gets a big break on their utility bill for a few months. As it stands, winter here means days that have a gorgeous temperature in the mid to upper 70s and cool nights in the 50s and 60s. What this means for us is that we can turn off our air conditioners after a hardworking 9 months and use our heat a few times each month when temperatures really dip low. The open doors and windows are great for our utility bill, cutting it by three quarters every year.

And while I know not everyone can forgo heat and air during winter because the weather is so perfect, I figured it was a good time to do a little research and figure out how those of you who live somewhere a little warmer or a little colder and need heat and air can save on your own utility bill anytime of the year.

Programmable Thermostats

I just bought my husband the Nest thermostat. It’s some sort of technical genius that can tell what we like as far as temperature, how we like it and when we like it (it’s every woman’s dream man turned into a thermostat). It learns to recognize our habits and work based on those. It’s also programmable so if we are on vacation and we decide to turn it off completely, we can log into our system from wherever we are on our iPads or phones and turn it on again so that when we come home our house is comfortable. It saves up to 30 percent off your utility bill every year.

Clean Air Filters

Guilty, guilty, guilty. We are so bad about replacing our air filters, which is something we should be better at doing since we use our air every day for nine solid months every year. However, we don’t always remember to do it and we end up learning the hard way. When your air filters are clean, they work better. Your air doesn’t have to work so hard to cool your home, which saves on your utility bill and it saves your air conditioning system from becoming tired and dying too soon. If you neglect regular maintenance, you might end up needing air conditioning repair sooner than you’d like.

LED Lights

One of the best investments you can make for your home is buying LED lighting. It’s more expensive than regular lighting, but it can actually lower your utility bill significantly. For example, the average size home can save $200+ per year on their utilities by switching to these lights.
