8 – Psycho was the first American film to feature a toilet flushing.
The film Psycho, produced by Alfred Hitchcock, was a low-budget, black and white production that initially received mixed reviews by critics. However, it is now considered one of Hitchcock’s best films ever made.
Leading the most famous scene from the movie is a toilet getting flushed on screen—a completely taboo thing in the film-making business of the 1960s. In fact, the bathroom as a whole was thought of as distasteful and private, a rarely depicted element in the movies back then. The toilet being flushed by Janet Leigh, the star of the film, was the first time in a mainstream American film that that had been shown.
