3 Ways To Get Your Kids To Talk To You About Their School Day

Sometimes what goes on during our kid’s school day as a mystery.  We as parents want to know what is going on with our kids at school but sometimes they don’t want to share that information.  There are things that you can to do get your kids to talk to you about their school day.

One way to get your kids to talk to you about their school day is to be available when your kids get home from school if at all possible.  I have found with my own children that they are most willing to talk about their school day when they first get home.  Things are fresh on their mind about their day and they are most willing to open up.  I try to not be on the phone or doing anything else when they get home so that I can get all the little snippets of information they are willing to share.

Another thing you can do to get your kids to talk to you about their school day is to ask specific questions instead of asking how their day was.  Ask who they sat by at lunch time or who their favorite teacher is and why.  This will give you more of a window into their school day because they can’t answer with a one word answer that tells you nothing.

Playing the high and low game at dinner time is another good way to get your kids to talk to you about their school day.  The high and low game is when you all go around the table and ask what the high and low of everyone’s day was.  In addition to giving you the information you want so badly from your children on how things are going, they will also get a window into Mom and Dad’s world.
